I got over most of the resentment about a decade ago. Every now and then, one relative or another will reach out and seem reasonable/normal, and I’ll get my hopes up. We might even meet up and have a good time once or twice. But inevitably, they’ll bring God into the equation. And I’m not a dick; if I’m out with religious friends or family and they want to do a quick and quiet pre-meal prayer, I don’t get snarky. I sit quietly and Pretty Living Unapologetically Black Shirt lets them do their thing. I don’t ask them “So how can you believe in this ridiculous shit?” or “How can you say that this is good behavior? Your own book says don’t do it.” But they never return the courtesy, and I’m left presuming that they only reached out because they were somehow convinced they’d be the ones to pull me back in. I’m sorry. I have never had to deal with anything like this and I admire you for it. Once you fully accept a secular philosophy it is actually pretty easy to hold onto it, isn’t it? You don’t have to rail against others and Pretty Living Unapologetically Black Shirt come up with all sorts of terrifying fairy tales or treat them like shit, to hold on to them.
